This year GB Precision celebrates its 40th anniversary. The firm has certainly come a long way from the workshop in a converted stable at the back of the Selly Oak Institute, where Gerry Turner, father of current MD, Paul, started the business. From the start, there was plenty of work in the West Midlands and GB Precision found a ready market for its engineering capabilities – in particular for surface, cylindrical and form grinding. Quickly outgrowing those original premises, the company moved to Balsall Heath, from where, in 1990, it relocated once again, this time to its current factory in Sparkbrook - extended in 2006 to double the available floorspace. Perhaps unusually, Paul, as the son of the owner, had not intended to join the family firm - although he had studied Technical Drawing and Metalwork, his career had developed in Computing. By 1994 however, it was clear that his skills could make a real difference to the company and Paul made the move to GB Precision. Soon the first CNC machine had been purchased – the start of an on-going strategy of investment in technology that has continued ever since. That first CNC mill was followed by a CNC lathe, a die sink EDM and state-of-the-art CNC grinding machines soon followed. GB Precision became known for combining skills and technology to tackle jobs other subcontractors wouldn’t touch. “If you can’t do it, give it to GB Precision.” Today’s challenges continue to be met with the latest technology, including an automation cell with a robot serving a Roders high speed milling machine and a fully equipped Metrology Department – while the high accuracy grinding tradition continues with the recent installation of the company’s third high-specification Studer. |
